All orders through the bigcartel have gone out, my apologies for the delay. I have about 2 copies of S4D#2 left, and approximately half of both the Alaskan Night Bears and God Destroyer tapes left (that's around about 10 and 20, respectively). CD-Rs are sitting at a little more than half but I'll be sending out some promo packs over the next couple of days. Various distro stock is all limited to 1 or 2 copies.

Pop. 1280 - The Horror

It's time you got acquainted with Pop. 1280, they are from New York and they will make your booty shake or make your hips to the right, and hips to the left. There are endless amounts of noisy grooves throughout, and the bass proudly bounces over squealing guitar lines. There are comparisons to The Men and of course Sonic Youth. But i think the real obvious Swans (Filth/Cop) sound is real obvious throughout the album.

Vile Mess - Vile Mess

Vile Mess is a fastcore/powerviolence group out of Canberra, Australia. They've put out an EP (which I believe is their first) that rips some fast as fuck riffs and burly vocals across six songs in one second under five minutes. The band have quite a full sound a la Mind Eraser and toy with heavy hardcore tenets when they aren't blasting.

There may not be much to said in about Vile Mess in way of originality, but Vile Mess take a very used and abused style and keep it fun and interesting, which is what you should expect of a band in this genre. If you're a PV nut or are dead keen on Australian bands playing this style, this is definitely worth a listen. The choice of sample at the beginning of the first song is perfect.

Lo-fi by Default - Sampler

Lo-fi by Default is a DIY label that eschews genre bounds and brings together artists from all around the world who follow a line of DIY, lo-fi recording practices. Their roster contains artists in styles ranging from math rock, post-punk, hardcore, electronic music, hip-hop and chillwave, though that's barely scratching the surface. You can hear 10 different artists across the 18 songs on this compilation, all of which are genuine in their DIY expression - the pretension that can come with being 'lo-fi' is not a valid criticism here.

I would have liked to go through some of the bands here in various detail but I've decided I won't bore you (or simply because I have little time to continue writing this blurb). What I can say with certainty is that there actually wasn't a single artist on here that I didn't find compositionally or at the least thematically interesting. Some definite highlights were the mid-west emo interpretation of John Lithgoat, the lo-fi, fuzz-meshed jangly post-punk of The Latecomers, the garage pop sensibilities of Turning Jew or the droney shoegaze of Metropolitan Intent. I could have kept going with the wordy descriptions but I'd like to leave a little of the surprise of discovery to the rest of you.

If DIY/lo-fi music interests you, if you are in a band that follows a similar recording aesthetic or if you get a little wet over compilations, Lo-fi by Default's sampler is most worthy of being picked apart.

Sarsekim - Fathom the Spheres

I guess with the torrent of death metal bands/records that came out of Australia, and the rising nwoosdm, in 2009, bands were bound to be buried here and there. This seems to be one of the unfortunate. They're a pretty riffy, not so wanky, tech-death band that, for the most part, are pretty enjoyable. Can't say my attention doesn't drift here and there, but overall it's solid.

Up for more noise? Like, caught in a hurricane in a scrapyard during an earthquake, noise? This really is some of the most nut rattling, ear fucking, and utterly destructive harsh noise i've heard, though I'm sure there's much more out there. Other Music - Incidents Out of Context

Wow. This is music treads the careful line between being challenging and engaging and does so magnificently. Compositionally, these pieces are intricate and complicated but are still very accessible and interesting. The second track "Music With Too Many Parts" is probably the most "experimental" song in terms of songwriting; they use a scale of fourteen unequal intervals per octave. It also sounds like an Eastern European scale, there are some notes here that you just don't here on a regular basis when listening to music based in Western European scales, keys, etc. "It is It" (parts one and two) both feature tempo and time signature changes that are impressive and striking, yet occur so effortlessly and naturally. "The Spirit is Willing" shows off their syth and drum syncopation skillz. And the title track, well, I'll let you discover that one for yourself.

The actual textures of the instruments themselves are as interesting as the songwriting. 80s synth voices that would be cheesy otherwise fit nicely in here and sound great. In addition to synth, bass, and flute, there are many unorthodox instruments at play here, such as the marimba and other things that I've never even heard of. Upon first listen to this record, I actually chuckled to myself a few times just out of sheer surprise. And apparently this band uses 'just intonation' tuning a lot, which is really complicated and makes cool sounds so if you really wanna know click here

Rations - How Much Land Does a Man Need? 7"

Rations are a Long Island NY punk group, and How Much Land Does a Man Need? is their second release. I've actually struggled to think about things to talk about in this review, as I hadn't previously heard of this band nor do I know too much about the style of music they play. Nonetheless, since receiving this 7" a little over a week ago I've played it about 3 times a day, every day.

The 5 songs here consist of mid-paced and well-defined punk music with a strong melodic edge. Some might (loosely) call it pop-punk, but I personally don't see too much of a pop aesthetic in these songs. Regardless, the 7" shows great musicianship and while the songs themselves are not compositionally complex, they are absolutely not generic. Perhaps we should avoid my shitty descriptions and let you all hear it for yourselves - you can stream the title track at this bandcamp page.

Rations' songs just have a little something that makes every moment poignant no matter what you're doing, provided the record is spinning. I've been lying in bed looking up out of my windows at the sky or doing something as mundane as eating cereal and I've just stopped to reflect. The music has a definite authenticity that allows you to lose yourself in it without any worry of anxiety or negativity. Put in simpler terms, I would call How Much Land Does a Man Need? a 'feel-good' record.

The 7" comes with a 12 page booklet designed by the guitarist, who also runs one of the 10 labels who've co-released the record. 1000 copies were pressed, so they're currently in abundance and you would do well to pick one up. This comes with my strongest recommendation.

Perth's Jerk Store Records is selling them for $5 postage paid anywhere in Australia, or $3 in person. If you're from down here, definitely do not miss the opportunity as I'm not entirely sure how many copies Alex has. Red Nightfall - Red Nightfall

While I'm most certainly a sucker for genre labels, it just so happens that sometimes I'll come across a record that will make me avoid categorising at all costs - while it's so very easy to label a band or record, putting a box around something simply means that that particular thing cannot venture beyond the boundaries of that box (at least in the boxer's mind). This sort of discussion is usually up in the air, and while it's easy to 'box' almost any type of music, sometimes it's just better to forget your critical faculty and enjoy the emotive side a piece of music has to offer. For the first time in a long time I did just that with Red Nightfall's debut LP, and I like to think that it fostered a stronger connection with the music. Initial listens of the album made me realise that if I were to write a review talking about how they're an indie rock band and how they either fit in or deviate from the typical tenets of the style, I would not be doing the Toronto based quartet any justice.

The band label themselves as both 'sad bastard indie-rock' and similar to 'early Pink Floyd or King Crimson'. While I believe the former description fits perfectly, I personally do not hear any Floyd or Crimson at all. Maybe I'm listening out for the wrong things? Regardless, I'll be taking this review down the sad bastard track; Red Nightfall as a record consists of 9 stripped down and sombre songs which more often than not build up in intensity as they progress. Generally speaking this is an indie-rock record, but there are folk, slowcore and perhaps even loose post-rock elements thrown into the mix, all which collude to give Red Nightfall a distinct character.

Instrumentally, this record is immaculate - rather than give a detailed description of what each member does and sounds like, I'm going to point out two particular elements which stick out to me as defining facets of Red Nightfall. Firstly, Addison Siemko's vocals suit the solemn and often melancholic atmosphere perfectly, and his ability to convey a completely different mood with the slightest change in his voice allows a great deal of introspection on the listener's behalf. The second notable thing is Patrick Illian's bass lines. The way they give life and urgency to the songs needs to be heard rather than described, so I'll just say that the bass' prominence in the mix is dearly welcomed.

I've done nothing but praise this album so far, so I'd like to end things on a more realistic note. I really enjoy this record, and I can state with no inhibitions that Red Nightfall are definitely onto something. Nonetheless, I think the band could spend a little more time fine-tuning their 'album-craft', if that makes any sense. Individual songs on the record are great - in fact, I don't think there are any that I didn't care for (double negative deal with it), but writing a collection of songs and putting them in an album is different to writing an album. I feel that Red Nightfall could very easily construct a highly cohesive record which oozes thematic continuity, but that's not quite the case here. All 9 songs have their own emotional 'rides', but when I pop this into the player, I feel that I'm sitting there listening to a song at a time rather than all 9 in a row.

All of that aside, this is a great record and being their debut it's a bit much to criticise them for such minute details. If artists such as The National, Vic Chessnutt or Jeff Buckley are your thing, Red Nightfall is well worth hearing. Wet Witch - Wet Witch

Wet Witch is a Brooklyn based punk rock band who bring together the best elements of both death rock and hardcore punk. Crime Desire might come to mind due to their own death rock interpretation, though Wet Witch play less into the hands of hardcore and keep the focus elsewhere.

This distinction helps in defining exactly the style that Wet Witch has spawned - at a fundamental level this feels like a punk record, but it's further layered with rock sensibilities and the almost mechanical accessibility of every band that considers Christian Death as an influence.

Burn Books is putting out their debut record, a four song, one-sided 12" slab of wax. While I could vouch for the quality of the record, the simple fact that Burn Books set them up for a vinyl release before putting out a demo or even before hearing any material speaks volumes for the group.

If death rock is your thing, if you like newer bands who mix it with other genres or if you have an interest in the NY alternative scene (i.e. The Men, Nomos or Night Birds), then Wet Witch should be right up your alley.

XfrankgrimesX - Pretty Buzzy

'XfrankgrimesX once again delves into the depressing nature of modern life, covering a diverse range of topics including vending machines stealing your money, getting nits and looking like Robert Smith when you cut off your dreads, the horror of public transport and pizza places that still can't cut eight even slices'.

XfrankgrimesX have followed up their Old Grimey EP with another release of short, raging powerviolence numbers, all with some really great samples. Pretty Buzzy has a more crisp and sharp sound than the Old Grimey EP, but the song structure is mostly the same. One thing which stook out to me however is that Pretty Buzzy has a few songs that employ some slower and doomier parts, though in the loosest possible sense. It still fits within the overall XfrankgrimesX sound however.

Another nifty little surprise here is a cover of Iron Lung's Sexless/No Sex, and though this cover is musically faithful, they lyrics have been slightly altered - the song is now called Snackless//No Snacks. While I would not say that XfrankgrimesX are a groundbreaking band, they have a certain charm to them which I simply cannot ignore. Their songs are basic but well written, and overall they're just hilarious. Their use of samples is perfect - we have more Simpsons ones on Pretty Buzzy, but one of the best lines from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is used too.

According to their bandcamp Pretty Buzzy is XfrankgrimesX's second and 'final' release. I'm not entirely sure if the band is dead or not, but all I can say is go listen to Pretty Buzzy (it's streaming on their bandcamp) and contact the band for physical copies. Support.

SHACKL∑S - Maunder

Up and coming hardcore punx from Byron Bay are putting out a 7" on Arrest Records. I wouldn't go so far to say that Arrest Records hosts the best of Australian hardcore (a lot of it is generic and totally forgettable) but they've made a name for themselves nationally and if they keep putting out records from quality bands like Shackles then I'll keep up the support.

Shackles have been around for a while and have played shows, put out a demo etc. etc. They first came to my attention through Sean's Skullfucked blog, as he has some level of involvement with the band (putting out one of their demo tapes).

As far as I know this is their first vinyl recording and it's extremely solid. Reminds me a bit of Taipan, playing heavy handed hardcore with metallic flourishes and even hints of powerviolence (though it's not overt). 11 tracks here, and overall the 7" is a ripper.

1. Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972

Tim Hecker's forays into dissonance have undergone something of a maturation, the result being Ravedeath, 1972. I won't go into specifics - one will take from ambient music something else entirely from what another does. All that needs to be said is that this is essential listening, ambient fan or otherwise, and perhaps Hecker's best work yet.

2. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Let England Shake is without a doubt Harvey's most eloquent record. A singular theme, which is represented in both lyric and composition, is maintained throughout, creating a thematically dense and cohesive record. If there's a pop album that you need to hear in 2011, it's this one.

3. Fell Voices - Fell Voices

Fell Voices' second LP is again another excellent addition to the band's discography - many blogstalkers would have already heard the two tracks on here previously, as they were put in on a limited edition tour promo last year, but to have them out on LP was the band's original intention. This is again 'Casciadian' black metal, but much more authentic than a lot of the scene's other bands. Fell Voices are easily the most consistent of the groups that are associated with this style, and these two tracks are probably their best. Though it may seem daunting having over 40 minutes spread out over two tracks, the music here is highly engaging and very replayable. I've spun this record countless times since receiving it - it inarguably deserves the accolades that I or anyone else give it.

4. Soul Swallower - Devoured

I didn't know about Devoured until its release, and even when I first heard it I wasn't overly impressed. Still, I got my hands on the LP and before long I was playing it regularly. Sharing members with Mind Eraser, this group have been in hiding for several years while working on this LP, and their efforts have not been in vain. Heavy-handed hardcore with occasional PV elements thrusts this into any punk lover's conscience, and the songs themselves are all fantastic. One of easiest albums to listen start to finish in one sitting. Last but not least, those riffs. Goddamn.

5. Antediluvian - Through the Cervix of Hawaah

This was a bit of a late addition to my 2011 musical sphere, but I didn't expect this record to go past without my attention. After their great demo from ealier this year, I had high expectations and they have definitely been met. This is tentatively my favourite death metal record of the year, though I have not absorbed this to the same extent that I have Blaspherian and Cianide's releases. Taking a Portal-esque aesthetic and combining it with their own unique take on esoteric and occult black/death, Antediluvian have made a record which will easily be remembered for the rest of the decade.

6. Loss - Despond

Loss has taken their sweet time putting out an LP, but we've finally been blessed with one of the best funeral doom records in a long time. Despond takes everything the band has been working towards over the last decade and puts it all into one unforgiving and despondent album. Three earlier tracks have been rerecorded and put into a cohesive slab of funeral doom that is easily the best thing the genre has seen since Stabat Mater’s self-titled. I doubt Despond will be topped in 2011 in terms of doom, though Worship is set to record its third LP later this year which will surely give it a run for its money. Vile gutturals, downcast melodies and a richly textured composition, this has everything it needs to be great. Perhaps now Loss will finally get the recognition it deserves.

7. Blaspherian - Infernal Warriors of Death

It took them four years of what I assume was profane contemplation, but Blaspherian have finally returned to the fold with the release of their first LP Infernal Warriors of Death. Earlier material such as Allegiance to the Will of Damnation certainly made a name for these Texan blasphemers, but I feel safe in saying that this is record is what the band has been working towards since its inception. Blaspherian model a very dense style of death metal on this record, one which is structurally impressive and very long-lasting - their method of contructing a motif and then making subtle variations in said motif is engaging and welcome. Overall, there is little to criticise on Infernal Warriors of Death, and a lot that will make fans of death metal gush over its cohesion.

8. The Men - Leave Home

The Men's first LP Immaculada was a really great record, one which I spin regularly, so Leave Home had a lot of expectations to meet. To put it bluntly, this easily matches the debut and in many respects exceeds it. The Men mix noise rock and hardcore with varying degress of intensity, incorporating influences from a host of other styles as well (from shoegaze to no-wave). While a lot of this record is ecentric in many ways, it is immediately appealing and doesn't get old.

9. Total Control - Henge Beat

Henge Beat is the long-awaited long player from Melbourne's premier synth punk group Total Control. After toying with their fans for several years with numerous EPs, the band have collected themselves and released an extraordinarly cohesive record to usher in the next stage of Total Control. Henge Beat takes the overly jarring synth punk from earlier releases and puts it into a much more palatable format. Several songs have been rerecorded, such as 'Retiree', and sound just as good as the earlier takes (if not better). Total Control essentially takes the energy of punk music and combines it with electronic tenets, at times giving it a strong (yet modern) post-punk vibe. The record excels when it is juxtaposing between its varying elements, and while being relatively short, encourages constant listening. Not to be missed.

10. Helta Skelta - Helta Skelta

I only got this LP several weeks ago but it hasn't left my player since I first heard it. Having released an excellent demo tape a couple of years ago, Perth's Helta Skelta seemingly went into hiding but popped back to life some time ago with the announcement of this LP. I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't think it would be as addictive as it is. Jangly surf punk meets 80s hardcore, in the best possible sense. Seeing them live just after I got the LP further cements my opinion that Helta Skelta is on the same level as both Extortion and Suffer.

Tenement - The Blind Wink

There are days where nostalgia grips me so strongly that I'm rendered incapable of doing anything but putting on my favourite albums of yesteryear or just lying on the couch and rewatching early Scrubs episodes. What I listen to really depends on whether or not I want to get out of my fuzzy, sentimental stupor - if I'd rather lie there comatose, I'll spin something like Disintegration, but if I want to smile in teary bliss then I'll put on --. Nothing you idiots, happy music is for faggots.

Okay, not really. But to be perfectly honest, I'm usually overcome with melancholy in these aforementioned 'episodes' I experience, and most of the time my musical therapy matches that mood. This is where Tenement comes in - their second LP The Blind Wink was only released this year, but it feels like I grew up listening to this record. After about three listens, I felt like I already knew the songs and that I had already bonded with them over the years. This isn't because they imitate anybody (though obviously their influences are displayed proudly on their sleeves) nor is it because their music is generic in any kind of way - it's simply because they've perfectly captured the youthful exuberance that the fuzzy pop/punk of the 90s impressed upon an entire generation.

The Blind Wink takes on board a host of previous styles - as Amos from the band states, 'it runs the gamut of fuzz pop like the Swirlies, punk/pop like the Descendents, and more minimalist Big Star styled pop songs'. The overall punk feel to the record is probably the most pronounced aspect, but the incorporation of various indie rock tenets really complements Tenement's sound. Bands like Grandaddy or even Built to Spill are channelled through the music, reinforcing The Blind Wink's even greater grounding in the 90s.

If you're 22 and embittered by your vanishing youth, this album is probably perfect for you. While it makes me feel like a child again, it does it in a way that is far from childish. With mature composition and a mature approach to the genre, The Blind Wink's entire purpose is to recreate the naivity and optimism only someone half my age could have. And believe me, they have succeeded.

Scorpion Violente - Uberschleiss

Here's a little "synth pop" for you guys. Always thought that calling modern bands that use analog synths and a little noise experimentation "synth pop" was a little strange. Nevertheless, these are some great tunes. Fuzzed out analog synths dance on top of almost garagey/grimey beats. The beats are very strong in this music, they really give some songs the umph that is commonly missing amoung peer artists that take a minimalist approach (Lust for Youth). While LFY is one of my current favorite bands out, Scorpion Violente, with their more aggressive take on synthpop, set themselves apart from all of the cool shit currently coming out of Denmark and Sweden.

The beats do become repetitive, however. The title track is a perfect example of this. The beat isn't bad, it just can't sustain a four and a half minute song with only minor variations. There are several songs here that would be better off if a minute or two had been trimmed off.

The vocals may be an issue for some. Its typical of post-punk: moaning and reverb-laden. Newcomers might be turned off by the style, but if you listen through the whole record, they are easy to adjust to and you might actually end up liking it.

Overall, this album is refreshing. The more aggressive style (like some contrepoison tracks) makes it stand out against the other projects that are currently cranking out cassettes on posh isolation, ark tapes, release the bats, utmarken and avant!.

Peopling - Peopling EP

Textured and noisy Butthole Surfers revivalism at its best, Peopling's debut EP takes a decades old noise rock aesthetic and melds it with more contemporary noise aspects. Opening with 'Come Home Eccentric', the self-titled record sets the scene with understated crackling providing a subtle and almost inviting cushion of noise to the bouncy rhythms of the song itself. It's an interesting mix but it works in such a way as to give the latent 'noise rock' aspect a loose pop sensibility.

What puts this more into the experimental category are the interludes that pop up between the 'songs' - 'Reprog' doesn't let go of the noisy foundation of the opener and lets the fuzz lilt into a jarring stop/start expulsion of sound. While there could be a little more smoothness in the transition between the tracks (here and throughout the EP), the way in which the interludes - if you can call them that - accentuate the more structured compositions is notable.

'Fiji' is a track that I particularly am fond of, mainly because of its repetitive (read as: hypnotic) nature. This element pops up in all of the tracks, but it is more pronounced in the aforementioned song. Of the 6 compositions on the EP, a definite mood and personality is apparent - Ronnie, the fingernails behind Peopling, maintains cohesion across the record, but at the same time makes sure to do something different with every song. What you will hear in one is compositionally and perhaps thematically linked with the others, but it most certainly has its own character. That's all you ever really need from a record like this.

Craig Colorusso - Sun Boxes

Sun Boxes is a 7" comprising of two reasonably short field recordings. The catch is that these recordings were done through solar panels, which give off ambient texture depending on the amount and consistency of its input. I've chosen not to speak at length about this record, but to simply say that not only is the concept behind it excellent, the music itself is absolutely exceptional. Soothing tones that warp and pulse to the rhythm of something we cannot see and can barely feel.

I was planning on posting my rip of this fine compilation sometime soon, but I noticed it was just posted on Corrupted Delights. So, since I'm a lazy fuck, I'll just borrow their link and give their blog a plug cause they always upload great stuff. Probably sounds better than mine anyway:/

This mammoth compilation of seemingly exclusive material (something I love about Hospital Prod. comps) from 51 artists, clocking in at nearly 3hrs, is to be a reflection of Hospital Productions' output over their years of operation. There is a fairly wide range of styles here, respective to the electronic genre. If you know the label, you pretty much know what you're getting into here. Only been through this once myself, but it's already up there with some of my favorites of the year. This release is limited to a hefty 1000 copies, and is still available from Hospital Productions, but they won't last forever.

Neat Beats - Cosmic Surgery

Coming out on Hop Skip Jump Records (who put out the great Moonbeams record earlier this year) is the project of Alvin Fenner, suitably called Neat Beats. Cosmic Surgery is his first LP under the Neat Beats moniker, yet the maturity displayed here gives off the impression that Fenner has been doing this for a long time.

Cosmic Surgery is an electronic record, but it does not fall into the traps that often put me off the genre - there is no meandering, there is no identity crisis - and it doesn't actually try to be anything more than it is. Inarticulate visions of grandeur (the new M83 anyone?) would have ruined this record - Fenner keeps it thematically simple but compositionally coherent. At a fundamental level, this is an album of beats and samples. Fenner probably spent a good portion of his time splicing and dicing samples until he felt that the songs had actually become more than the sum of their parts, and I feel he has completely succeeded.

Whether you look at Cosmic Surgery as an electronic record, or as an 'instrumental hip-hop' album, the songs are all remarkably well crafted - there are very few albums of this kind I feel comfortable listening to while I'm doing nothing else, but Cosmic Surgery is one. Songs like 'Video Game Characters' or 'The Machine Destroys Everything' have strong pop elements which work entirely in their favour, but Fenner retains flow across the record by delivering different moods with each song. 'Turning on the Large Hadron Collider' and 'I Love You, Vashti...' are perhaps more solemn in relation to the aforementioned tracks, yet sit alongside them with marked continuity.

What perhaps characterises Cosmic Surgery is best explained in one of its tags - 'downtempo'. This is music to relax to, music to chill to, music to take drugs to. Offering technical descriptions of the music here seems almost pointless - despite there being a high level of musicianship displayed - because this is all about mood, and Fenner has undoubtedly hit the spot. I could talk at length about how this record makes me feel or the best way to listen to it, but nothing really would compare to the words of the artist:

'Cosmic Surgery by Neat Beats is a compilation of emotionally obscured and forgotten sounds warped and rewoven into an experimental downtempo beat album that takes hints from DJ Shadow, The Microphones, Animal Collective, Prefuse 73, and Flying Lotus, to name a few. I'd suggest waiting for a rainy day, smoking a cigarette indoors and throwing this record on...'

Daniel Tosh - True Stories I Made Up

Often, when a comedian doesn't have much original content, or a fresh delivery style, the old stand-by is to just be as offensive and shocking as possible. While there is certainly enough material to make your parents blush here, Tosh's comedy is also intelligent. His nimbly constructed rants often veer off into self-referential tirades that will leave you confused as to what joke you're actually laughing at. And sometimes, his social commentary hits a cord inside you where you realize he's actually got a point and you're laughing at something that's really pretty fucked up. Here's a few of my favorite lines:

- I hope God speaks English. If I get up to heaven and have to point at a menu, I'm gonna be pissed.

- I'm actually all for gay marriage. Just the thought of having a man around the house, means I'll actually get some work done. C'mon, we've got chores this weekend.

- Anal sex is a lot like spinach: if you're forced to have it as a child, you won't enjoy it as an adult.

Mauthausen Orchestra - Sonic Deprivation

A 2009 compilation of excerpts from the main body of the legendary Italian power electronics project in the 1980s. My personal favorite is the 2nd track, an excerpt from Anal Perversion part 2. Note that while it says "excerpt," most of the original tracks were 1/2 hour long. I think that these versions were edited well and usually prefer to listen to this over the long form albums.

This is essential power electronics. One of the first artists to be penned with the genre name, a lot of this stuff still sounds brutal. There's no electro elements a la alberich or koufar, although one does get an early post-industrial vibe from time to time.

Released by Psychedelic Lotus Order, again, the same who released the Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh vinyl, this is sure to be a horrific and dismal affair, as you would expect. Anatomia/Burial Invocation - Decomposed Serenades Split

Had no idea about this split until earlier this morning. Two songs from each band, coming in at a little over ten minutes. In all honesty I care very little for Anatomia - they always come off as a uninspired version of Coffins, and while I can listen to their music, none of their material ever warrants constant plays. Burial Invocation, on the otherhand, are one of the best OSDM newcomers of the past couple of years. Fans have been anticipating their upcoming LP for some time now, so this acts somewhat as a teaser. Their contribution not only shits over Anatomia's track but it's easily comparable to the material from their demo. The split is worth hearing for Burial Invocation alone.

Another short lived EP from Prurient. This is one of the more "private" releases, aka not sold on Hydra Head, which of course means it's sold out. Limited to 110 usually translates to sold out in an hour or two for Prurient on Hospital, but for some reason this stuck around for a while longer. Could've been the fact that it came as two C10 tapes with just one track on each side, priced like any other two cassette dealy. Mmmhm. Content wise, Despiritualized adds some repetitive, at times hypnotic, industrial synth loops to the typical power electronics, with all the songs a cunt hair over five minutes.

Just a post to let people who have already ordered the God Destroyer tape know that I haven't received the inserts for the tape yet, but should do so very soon. Most if not all the orders without a GD tape have gone out.

Got some new distro stuff in too. Doomed Beast is an Australian heavy metal band, playing solid riffs with an occult atmosphere. I have a few copies of their debut demo tape available. Along with that, I received some extra copies of Australian experimental/blackened/industrial project Oxygen Abortion. I've haven't quite absorbed their music just yet, so I can't quite describe it. I have copies of their first EP and a compilation release of their first album + EP.

My third favorite album of all time. Along with Perfect from Now On, (which was released in the same year, mind) this is the pinnacle of mid 90s indie rock. (ugh, indie rock, such a featureless genre tag.)

I have a massive headache and don't wanna describe this music, but its tightly written and dynamic and very appropriately produced.

NOTE: Although the album art here is for the UK version, I have uploaded the US version which features an extra track at the end. I just couldn't find an appropriately sized picture for the US artwork.

Kronofogden - Rid I Natt

It was only earlier this year that I realised Scandinavian hardcore wasn't left behind in the 80s. Bands like Heratys and the like are still carrying on, perhaps, as some will argue, without originality or the same inspiration that made the style so great. However, like any 'revival' that's taking place, the band's records that are being produced should be judged on their own merits and not so much on whether they are refreshing to the style or just plain derivative. Kronofogden belong to the former - this tape isn't by any means a 'highlight' for me, but there's just a shit ton of Euro raging to be heard across these 15 songs. If you worship Totalitar on a regular basis, this is probably for you. A CD-R version is available because the tape was severely limited, but I do know that Coffin Cut Records still has a few cassettes available.

Violent Pink - The Propaganda of the Deed

Sooo, my gf bought me this (she's awesome) along with the 2x Cassette In Currents. Both rule, and I'd say that In Currents is a little better. I'd upload them both, but my ripping abilities suck ass at the moment. As soon as I get a rip that does the record justice, I'll post it here.

Now, Violent Pink (Tyler Keen) produces some very tight, rhythmic and layered noise. On most tracks, you'll find slowly oscillating drones of static, whirling sine-wave synths that are "syncopated" with jagged rhythmic bursts of feedback. "October 19, 1977" and "Attacks" are the most archetypal examples of this. One stand-out feature of this release are the vocals. Completely distorted beyond belief, wretched, writhing, hateful, desperate; they're simply some of the best screams I've heard in any noise release.

The album is also mixed very creatively. The main components (screamed vocals, voice samples, noise/static drones, feedback, synth) are brought to prominence/buried appropriately across the different tracks. Sometimes the synth and vocals will be on top and most prominent, other times feedback and drones prevail. It definitely keeps things interesting, which is important with a somewhat limited sonic palette.

Point is: get this. Violent Pink is one of the best emerging noise artists in 2011.

For those who weren't paying much attention in the hardcore department, Total Abuse's Mutt was an ugly offering of noisy hardcore with stomp, and attitude and all that lovely stuff. At last we are pummeled with their latest Prison Sweat, and will probably be their last offering but who knows we will see. Right from the start we are where last years effort had just left off, it's almost as if we are given Secret Passage III. Once you are oozed out of the noise of "Final Passage" it is up to the listener to survive from then on.

Auris Apothecary Sampler #2

Hey bitches, this is kitsch. The music I post is different.

Auris Apothecary is a DIY label based in Bloomington, Indiana, USA that releases, punk, metal, avant-garde, noise, drone and the like in very limited quantities and with very unique packaging. Whether you think its pretentious or adds to the aesthetic of the music, one can't deny the creativity of packaging a cassette in a recycled library case with a library punch card that holds the liner notes. In addition to oddball packaging, they also release obscure formats, such as a loop of reel to reel tape, a 17" lathe cut made to be played at 17 rpm, and floppy discs. One such release this summer came wrapped in dried sunflower leaves with mysterious “magical seeds.” Anyway, you get the idea. Its the kind of stuff that hipsters would eat up if they could stomach the auditory “variety” that this label releases. This “variety” is nicely captured in their most recent “Sampler #2.” For every lo-fi indie bedroom jangle and autumn emo anthem there are also jagged and piercing power electronics, shrieking black noise and “samples of torture victims.”

This variety makes for quite an uneven listen. Just when you get in the groove of a nice indie song by The Constants or Fair Fjola, the next track blasts in with a scream of feedback from the likes of Dante Augustus Scarlatti or Torture Corpse. The tape isn't completely random, however, the label did a nice job of establishing a flow with the extremely eclectic array of material at hand. The poppier stuff tends to be at the beginning, and the more noisy and experimental songs populate the latter half. There are some nice transitions, too, where the minimal synth of Pendra Gon fades nicely into the layers of noise in Rob Funkhouser's track.

The point is, most of the material is excellent stuff. If you are familiar with the kind of label that has the tag line “We exist because fuck you” you pretty much know what you're getting yourself into with this compilation. Slays for Days Issue #2 + Label/Distro News

So, finally, the various label/distro/zine parts to this blog are almost ready. The second issue of S4D is complete - I have approximately 25 copies sitting next to me, left over from the gig I was selling them at last night. I mentioned before that Jeroen of Antediluvian was designing the cover, and you can see his work above. I've got to say, it looks fucking fantastic. I've even printed off extra copies of the design on separate sheets, to be sent out along with the zine. I'll be printing the rest of the copies later this week - as it stands, I'm aiming for a press of 150 copies, though that might extend to 200 depending on how quickly they go. I still have people asking me for copies of #1, so I'm hoping to keep some stock for at least a while. Anyway, information on the content can be read on the zine's page.

Those of you who have been keeping up with the 'label' news will know of the 4 releases that I am preparing. The CD-Rs and ANB tape are pretty much complete. The God Destroyer cassette should be ready soon, but I'll also make it 'available' for those who want it and just send them out when they're good to go. Willing Feet are a local band from here in Winnipeg and i've had the pleasure to see live many times. Two re-recorded songs you've heard from the demo and the sound is more menacing then ever. Right from the start you are whirled into the punk-y stomp of Deep With the Dead, and not much bands these days seem to be pulling off this style without coming off as tired and recycled.

Slays for Days Issue #2

Slays for Days Issue #2 is now on the horizon. Printing should take place hopefully this week or (worst case scenario) early next week. This time around the zine will be thicker and better presented, with some different types of articles. There are 5 interviews, with Internal Rot, Sacriphyx, Negative Reinforcement, XfrankgrimesX & Shit Weather, a write-up on Australian death metal, a few different gig reviews, a couple of short comics and about twice as many record reviews. It's shaping up pretty nicely, and I've had some help in terms of writing contribution and artwork. Jeroen of Antideluvian Art (who won the art contest we had earlier this year) is drawing the cover art, so I know his touch will give a really nice look to the zine (the picture above is not it). I'll hopefully be doing a press of 150, as the first issue sold out pretty quickly. Keep an eye out.

CN Roundhouse Kick - Phantomschmerz

German hardcore has built its own reputation over the last few decades, and so I'm not going to waste our time by going over specifics that you already know. The point is that CN Roundhouse Kick are a German hardcore band from Leipzig, and they have just released an LP entitled Phantomschmerz. Does it rip? Yes it does.

To cut straight to the point, CNRK are not a fast hardcore or a powerviolence band. This may seem like a surprise because most of my hardcore punk obsession is rooted in those styles, but even I struggle to figure out my own taste most of the time. CNRK are in fact an amalgamation of several punk varieties, ranging from neo-crust, metallic hardcore, screamo and sludge. This is not to say that the band simply takes these three styles and make a point of 'having' them on a song - Phantomschmerz is one of the more cohesive records I've heard recently, and it incorporates the various influences into a single driving force, better labelled simply as CN Roundhouse Kick. Depending on the direction of the song, the composition will fall into a different tempo and mood, which ultimately affects the 'style' which the listener will associate with it. While this is not a technical album per se, it is somewhat dense and layered, giving it longevity and charisma - occasionally the band will hint towards forays into technicality (they are of course accomplished musicians), but that is not the point of their music.

I'm not actually aware of how extensive a discography CNRK has, but as far as I know, everything they've put out (including this LP), is self-released. They uphold DIY culture not just in their personal lives, but also in their music - Phantomschmerz doesn't aim to please anybody. The songs are structured and textured to the point of excellence, and it's obvious that the band writes and plays its material with utmost pleasure. The simple fact that they've played countless shows all across Europe highlights the integrity of these musicians - this material would have been played out to perfection before being recorded, and it definitely shows.

There is a lot I can say about this record, but I find it hard to properly describe exactly what one should expect. The music here definitely has a progressive edge, not in the 'prog' kind of way but in the way that it progresses past the typical tenets of hardcore. The songs weave in and out of slower melodic passages, heavier doom-laden riff-fests and jarring hardcore, leaving little room for opinions. What I love about the record is that it recalls the style of crust bands like Fall of Efrafa have made popular, except it's being played in a more His Hero is Gone context, with less of a focus on the 'post-'. These songs aren't the 17 minute dirges of FoE, nor are they minute-long crusters - CNRK have found the perfect medium between the two.

I could go on about why I really like this album, and why I think a lot of you will like it, but I feel I've said too much already - maybe the band should do the talking from here on. The band's website has songs streaming and information on how to order a copy of the LP - don't sleep.

Otro Mundo - Jellied

Hailing from the scorched psychadelia of Arizona, Otro Mundo is stuck in an acid-laced and highly fuzzed out time warp. Jellied is essentially an exercise in futility - a lot of alternative and noise rock bands covered Otro Mundo's chosen path two decades ago, but this doesn't make Jellied any less involving. Recalling elements of bands like Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers or even punkier forms such as Husker Du, Jellied consists of 5 songs awash with distortion and catchy melodies.

Yuck put out a record earlier this year that attempted to recapture the particular 90s vibe that a lot of 20-somethings are now nostalgic for, and it succeeded in various ways - Otro Mundo is much more of an experimental take on the style, leaving the listener with very little pop sensibility to grasp. In fact, the lo-fi aesthetic of the record is one of its defining elements, and sets the standard for a lot of the songs.

The title track, for example, is an addictive yet simple indie rock song in the vein of Built to Spill, but it gives off an almost claustrophobic vibe from its subdued production and lower-mixed vocals. The anxiety that it invokes is something which can be found on most of the songs, and in my opinion sets it apart from the usual revivalist deadheads. The highlight of Jellied for me is undoubtedly Heart-Thrush - it's one of the less punky songs on the demo, and in an almost anthemic way totally epitomizes the mood of the record.

As far as I can tell, there is a hotbed of interesting acts currently residing in Arizona, such as Pigeon Religion, Avon Ladies, Nihilism, Acid Dawgz, and Naive - Otro Mundo has members of all of them. Prosanctus Inferi Red Streams of Flesh

For all those who have been waiting for more viscous enthropic ennui, Prosanctus Inferi returns with incestuous genuflections in presenting their newest EP, Red Streams of Flesh. Those who preferred the band's demo over their LP (as many apparently do) should be immensely pleased with this opus, as the guitar tone and overall production have become much thicker. Also of note is the new drummer's contribution to the band's sound; what used to a messy flurry of battering toms and cymbals giving something of a "machinegunning a beehive" effect, is now a uniform march of incessant hatred. The intensity here is off the charts, and the songwriting has changed in a similar way as well; composition is tighter than a nun's asshole and has largely moved away from the grindcore-like random stringing of riffs that characterized Prosanctus Inferi's previous approach. There is still plenty of fury, and plenty of chaos, but it has now become focused and directed into a singular vial of decadent sadism. As if to highlight these changes, the work closes with two older songs. Of the six on display, "Bent in Genuflexion" in particular is mind-fuckingly violent. Buy here.

I've only listened to this twice so far, so I can't provide an in-depth overview. However, first impressions are very good; this continues the style of Firmament while bringing back some of the more narrative stylings that were more prominent in The Forest Mourners. This is a welcome development in my book, as I felt that although the debut demo was certainly less accomplished in its compositions, it also had more energy and mood due to those narrative stylings. For those who are entirely unfamiliar with Midnight Odyssey, the music is largely a continuation of Burzum's Det Som Engang Var and Filosofem. Keyword being "continuation;" this band takes a cue from those albums and uses it to develop into a style very much its own, although another very obvious reference point would be Tangerine Dream. God Destroyer - III

Third release (obviously) from this New Zealand ambient/drone project. Two tracks, coming in at just over 20 minutes. The first, 'Ghosts', gradually builds in intensity over its 13 minute length, constantly adding texture and noise to its already warm and bass-y drone. It's arguably the best song they've recorded thus far.'Iñupiat' closes the EP with a gentle comedown, displaying an excellent grasp of minimalist composition. As an overall record, III is by far the most polished and conceptually 'complete' release by God Destroyer. You can download it from Zeronoize. Music Ruins Lives is back again - having been somewhat inactive over the past couple of months, the label has set off a series of upcoming releases with Bad Life's The Day You Die. Did I expect anything bad from MRL? Of course not. Did I expect to be blown away by Bad Life? Not entirely, but that's still what happened. Bad Life, as far as I can ascertain, have been around for a while, putting out some splits and such. The Day You Die seems to be their first full release however.

I find it hard to to properly categorise Bad Life. At its core, the band follows a post-punk template, but elements of noise rock, doom metal and Have a Nice Life-esque melancholy shine through. To sum it up as concisely as possible, this record is a fusion of both post-punk's and doom metal's versions of depression. Hearing Curisms alongside clear Black Sabbath influence seems to be a rather unpalatabe combination, but Bad Life make it work perfectly. Add to this a highly textured and addictive pop sensibility (warped beyond recognition by the band's experimental nature), and you have what could possibly be one of the best underground records of the year.

As dark as its subject matter may be, there is a consistent level of accessibility to The Day You Die, despite the record's almost malevolent atmosphere. For those of you who listened to nothing else but Deathconsciousness in the months following its release, you are strongly encouraged to spin this through just once. That's all it will take.

Nachzehrer - Pestilence Hungers in the Shadows

Nachzehrer from Boston have recently put out what I believe is their 2nd EP, available on CD and cassette, called Pestilence Hungers in the Shadows. The group play a primal and relentless form of black/thrash, where they successfully incorporate a strong level of melody without giving away any of the depravity the style demands. There are 6 songs here, most of which hover around the 4/5 minute mark, meaning there's more than enough material here to keep you hooked for some time. That's the thing about this - it has the coldness of black metal, but the thrashiness of it all is extremely addictive.

The production is quite clear but definitely not sterile. I personally love to hear it on tape as I think it would complement the band's sound very well. Copies are dwindling, but you can still order one from Demons Gate Records or simply be emailing the band at nachzehrerbm@yahoo.com

Little Kingdoms - Home EP

The when is September. The where is Philly. The EP is Home. And the band is Little Kingdoms. This eleven and a half minute release is an exercise in midwest emo - a place where success is only an ex-Cap'n Jazz member away.

Home is Little Kingdoms second effort after their debut Willow three years ago. Skimming through various public forums it was apparent Home was eagerly awaited by their modest yet devoted fanbase and did not disappoint. The EP dishes up three tracks of agreeable length seasoned generously with that midwestern American Football flavour. The opening track 'Colorado' manages a nice build up to a post-rock-esque crescendo in its four short minutes but the subsequent two tracks, 'Birds' and 'Little Minds' held more interest for me. Making good use of their dual vocals, twinkly guitar riffs and the odd psalm sample. The sound is suitably melancholy but all in all this EP is an emotional lightweight. It's mixtape-for-your-girl-crush friendly but you'll likely reach for something packing more punch when she inevitably tears out your vital organs. Nothing groundbreaking but nonetheless a solid and overall enjoyable effort.

Little Kingdoms consists of Jake Holden and Justin Berger accompanied by brother Mike Berger on bass. Could the Bergers be the next Kinsellas of sad boy music? Perhaps not yet but I'll be keeping an eye on where they take it from here.

If you were a fan of the recent Penpal post you'll probably dig this. And for those that really dig it there is word of a tape release so listen out for that.

Genus Inkasso - Occasionally Slumping, Smiling Weakly

Okay so I received this record in my inbox a little while ago and having listened to it on and off for some time, I really don't know what to make of it. Genus Inkasso is some sort of weird noise/PE/industrial project, and its recordings are eccentric and completely off-kilter. Elements of random noise and Prurient-esque harshness combine with bits of feedback and occasional industrial vibes to create what is an uncomfortable atmosphere. This is not to say the record is simply harsh and jarring noise, because it's not - there is little on here which could be described as 'harsh'. Most of it is actually rather subdued, but the strangeness that it exhibits merely is a result of the composition and unusual recording. I'm not going to rattle of specifics anymore - Genus Inkasso is an experimental noise project, that combines elements of drone and industrial within its atmosphere. It doesn't sound like anything else I've heard, and I think it's done very well - what do you think?

Thawed Out - Demo

Featuring members of Host (who we've featured before) and another UK band named No Reality, Thawed Out play a crusty and fucked up style of noisy hardcore similar to Cult Ritual or Total Abuse. The demo embraces its lo-fi sensibilities, which in turn works hand in hand with the band's downer punk style. A total of 5 songs, all of which are glazed with feedback and mid-tempo riffs. Lead breaks poke around on the demo, and are as you would expect - unpredictable and eccentric. Still, as ugly as this tries to be, it has an undeniable charm to it, one which will keep you coming back. This is for fans of the noisy hardcore making appearances lately, or simply old fuckheads who haven't given up on their United Mutation records.

Psychic Blood - S/T Demo

As a fuzzy combination of Sonic Youth and the Butthole Surfers, Psychic Blood have certainly done their research - their noise and shoegaze-laden style of discordant alternative rock does very well to remain true to the bands they're inspired by, but at the same time retain even a smidgeon of originality. Not to say that this is original, but there does seem to be a shortage of bands like Pyschic Blood these days - at least good ones. Post-punk melodies, noise-rock rhythms and shoegaze-esque distortions make up the brunt of this demo, and it's combined rather authentically underneath the band's lo-fi aesthetic. Apparently there is more Psychic Blood on the horizon, so if you like this demo, keep your eyes open.

Blut - Grief and Incurable Pain/Ritual and Ceremony

Ritualistic drone doom gets bad rep these days. A few years ago it was all the rage, but it seems no one really wants to get their hands dirty anymore. And fuck Sunn O))) - they don't deserve half the acclaim they get. While the drone doom genre may be lacking, this could be partly due to my own ignorance; I'm usually content with Corrupted repeats and a local act from these parts called Drowning Horse so I don't feel the need to search out other, newer groups. But this is where Blut makes their entry. A two-piece outfit from the UK, Blut combine noise and a lo-fi aesthetic to further emphasis the 'ritualistic' component of their style.

As far as I know, Blut has several releases under their belt - I received only two of these in the mail, but apparently they are the band's two full lengths, last year's Ritual and Ceremony and the recently released Grief and Incurable Pain. Both records are very similar in sound and style, combining colossal riffs with long and painfully slow passages of murky, droning ambience. It can be said with some certainty that Blut's style is not incredibly palatable, but this is merely from the outset. With repeated listens I've found a plethora of depth to these overly excessive recordings.

The way atmosphere is handled by the duo is surprisingly good. More often than not, the types of people making this kind of music don't really have any idea what they're doing and end up creating long songs that are boring as shit, feel like they go nowhere, and certainly don't help the listener 'transcend' to an alternate plane or whatever the fuck the intention is. There are little things here (remember, it's always the little things) that just make it for me. Both records are heavily textured, albeit in an extremely lo-fi manner, with layers and layers of fuzz cushioning the constantly rolling riffs. The noise and ambient passages are ritualistic by every definition of the word, and the occasional synth work that Blut utilises makes for some interesting vibes. In actual fact the noise/ambient passages remind me of 70s horror films, but without the four decades of deteriorating shock value.

What is most (un)pleasant about Blut is the sheer filthiness of the recording. The drums are completely buried, and sound entirely suffocated under the weight of the riffs. Leadwork is also put to use, arching over the murkiness of the songs. Good examples are in 'Death.Mourning.Famine' from Grief and Incurable Pain or 'Throne Ritual' from Ritual and Ceremony. The latter track goes for 24 minutes, and after building up a lumbering riff for a little over 6, throws in this harrowing black metal inspired tremolo-ed riffage, which sits perfectly with the overall mood of the track. Similar moments are strewn across both albums, and make the build-ups even more exhilarating. And just because I'm a lazy writer, I'm just going to tack this onto the end of the paragraph - no, Blut is not instrumental. The vocals aren't overly used, but they're mostly disgusting and completely unintelligible shrieks and gutturals. Whether this affects your decision to hear the band or not is irrevelent of the fact that they work perfectly with the music at hand.

I highly recommend this to fans of this style, particularly to anyone who wants a little foulness in the wake of Corrupted's overly clean recent offering. The Operator - The Mute Transaction

There were two possible outcomes in reviewing The Mute Transaction - the first would have been a long and mostly pointless review going over individual emotions and various tones, whereas the second would be a concise, no-bullshit summary. I decided to go with the latter. This is not The Operator's first work, which is obvious. The style here is electronica, but there is more than a hefty dose of ambient to keep faggot depressives like myself happy. I particularly like the very subtle minimalist facet to this album. It is obviously highly textured, but it never comes off as overwhelming. It's various drones meld in with unusual soundscapes that create a rather sombre atmosphere, one which intertwines with the album's various 'songs'. Particularly mention must be made of 'The Boiler' - it features organ work strangely reminscent of Tim Hecker on his recent Ravedeath, 1972 record. However, The Mute Transaction was released in October last year, some time before Hecker's record; COINCEDENCE?

Regardless, fans of ambient musis will certainly get a kick out of this, as well as anyone with a fascination for atmospheric and electronic music. The album is streaming on The Operator's bandcamp, where it can be also downloaded. Otherwise, I have been assigned to pass on this trusty mediafire link.

Penpal - Postscript EP

Some of you emotionally sensitive fags who have been reading this blog for a long time will remember the band Penpal, who were introduced to S4D by charlesfishowitz almost 2 years ago. How time flies. With that thought of nostalgia in my head, I set out listening to Penpal's newest EP (which, as the band pointed out to me, is available for free on their website) and remembered why my head feels heavy despite it being the first day of Spring.

Penpal take their usual Mid-west emo template a la American Football, and have again constructed a technical and highly engaging piece of music - it doesn't last long but it has multitudes of depth. To quote the band, 'We are a sucker for overdubs, over-complicated things, multiple tunings and tones, and there are sections on here that have 8+ guitar tracks'. While this is quite obviously emotionally charged, the complex composition adds further levels of sentimentality and musicianship.

The three tracks on this EP barely exceed 12 minutes in length, and it's available for free download from Penpal's site - there's literally no excuse for not listening to this.

Slays for Days Records

It’s been a long time coming but I’m pleased to announce that Slays for Days Records is almost up and running. It will be a DIY label/distro for DIY musicians, putting out very limited quantities of various drone/noise/metal/punk/experimental recordings. I'll have some distro stock every now and then too, mainly for Australian orders. Formats will be CD-R and cassette for now (as well as further issues of the print zine), but vinyl is definitely a goal (when I have the funds). So yeah, watch this space for more info.

Sorrows - Lethe

I received Sorrows' second EP digitally some time ago, and of course after finding out that it was a USBM band that used the term 'atmospheric' to describe their music, I was dubious. You can't blame me right? There is only Fell Voices; there was only one Weakling. Though predictably, one listen to this two track EP made me realise that my initial suspicions were wrong. Sorrows don't follow the 'atmospheric' USBM template too closely. The mood is quite expansive, with a moderate yet delectable fuzz overlayed with subtle yet pervasive symphonic work. But then this isn't symphonic black metal in the slightest - if I were forced to draw a comparison, some of the Canadian bands of last year and the year before immediately come to mind, namely Gris or Sombres Forets.

Both tracks are seven minutes long, with the first plodding along at a steady tempo and the second capitalising on the atmosphere created by the first - it features both the softer parts of the EP (in its acoustic beginning and end) but then has some early Burzum-esque riffage to drive the midsection of the song. I wouldn't really be able to say which track I enjoy more, but together they're fantastic. Even across two songs, Sorrows create a tangible and cohesive atmosphere, one which really sticks with you. Often with black metal I find that even the really good albums don't allow for much spontaneous replayability, but there have been times where I've played this EP 5 times back-to-back. It's easily digested but definitely leaves an impression.

Dirty Beaches - Badlands

Without a doubt this will now offically be my summer hangover record; in my opinion it's one of those love it or hate albums. Dirty Beaches offer you nothing more but a record do absolutley nothing to and it feels great. The only thing wrong here is that it's length does do the album justice as the album is not even a half hour long. After its completion the listener should feel lost and miserable and if you do not feel this way you are most likely not a person and probably a terrorist. Another thing Badlands could be criticized for is it's originality; the bassline from "A Hundred Highways" straight from Les Rallizes Denudes' song 'Night of the Assassins' but it's not like we haven't heard that bass line before in any other Denudes song anyway, it is time to get real. There are couple others worth mentioning but I just listened to the album again and i don't feel like doing anything anymore.

xfrankgrimesx - The Old Grimey EP

xfrankgrimesx formed less than a year ago in Christchurch, NZ and fit in rather nicely with the country's overall hardcore/powerviolence/filth output. I don't particularly want to go off on some bullshit tangent with this post, because it would be utterly pointless - xfrankgrimesx play a downer-esque style of hardcore with a hefty dose of powerviolence influence. Take it or leave it.

The band eschews any of the recent 'sludgy hardcore' trends with their music, keeping their songs short, fast and loud (bet that phrase hasn't been used before). This isn't to say that there aren't varying tempo changes across the EP's 15 songs, but a Weekend Nachos clone this is not. One thing that needs mentioning are the samples - they aren't overrused, and are some of the funniest I've heard.

Fans of Spazz, Infest or Charles Bronson should enjoy this, as well as anyone interested in well played DIY hardcore. You can download their EP here, or just listen on their bandcamp. Apparently the band have recently been touring, so here's hoping they put together some new material soon.

God Destroyer - S/T

God Destroyer is from New Zealand. I personally have not been to Australia's smaller neighbour (yet) but I've heard good things. For such a small country with a tiny population, I'm always surprised at how good underground music is over there. There are several death metal bands who've recently gained international limelight, and the last year or so I've uncovered a burdgeoning hardcore/PV scene with more filth than most can handle. Nowadays when I associate a style of music with NZ, I think of crackling tapes and lo-fi aesthetic.

Now to be sure, I'm not complaining in the least. While I'm positive every style of music exists in NZ and I simply haven't heard about it yet, God Destroyer is a surprise for me, as well as being completely expected. Given the different bands and styles I commonly associate with NZ, God Destroyer is very far removed. But then given the placid atmosphere and scenery that we all know NZ to be famous for, God Destroyer is incredibly fitting as a musical accompaniment to the country’s environment.

When I received the self-titled album, the tag of ambient didn’t dissuade my thoughts that this would be something a little noise oriented, something a little fucked up. This is not the case. God Destroyer is reminiscent of some earlier Aidan Baker, displaying gentle, flowing tones that pulsate through your own warped visions of nostalgia. There is something genuinely haunting about this type of drone music – while it can often be very alienating, it at the same time breeds a greater appreciation of isolation.

There are four lengthy tracks on this demo, all which follow a similar template. It’s pointless to go into specifics here – this is minimalist ambient music. However, when it does break the mold of minimalism and reaches into the expanses of drone, when the pulsations are loud and the musical surrounds are filled with a soothing buzz, God Destroyer is at its best. These weightier passages are juxtaposed with the minimalist quietness of other passages, further emphasising their intensity.

As far as I know (and can tell) this is a DIY recording, so listeners only familiar with the later works of bigger artists such as Baker or Tim Hecker should not expect crystal clear production. In my opinion the somewhat fuzzy exterior to this album gives it a sense of reality, making it all the more authentic and organic. But that’s just me though. Ultra//Negative - Finally, I'm At Peace

Fast hardcore in the vein of Extortion or Low Threat Profile, Ultra//Negative hail from New Hampshire, USA and have made their first EP available for free. The eight tracks are over pretty quickly, but there isn't any shortage of goodness. Elements of Spazz-esque powerviolence can be heard, as well as a hint of Japanese fast hardcore, particularly in the higher register vocals. I don't want to completely pidgeon-hole this as another PV incarnation though, as it's not - while PV elements exist, this is still firmly rooted in 'hardcore', with Discharge-y riffs and occasional d-beats fusing with tempo changes and fast hardcore insanity.

The Dada Tapes

From the outset, Perth, Western Australia's music scene seems sparse and uninviting, even to people who live here, but with enough dedication one will uncover a thriving and genuine underground, in a plethora of different styles and genres.

Perth has two main centres, being Perth (the CBD) and Fremantle, a port town. In terms of record stores, Fremantle has two well known ones (Mills and Junction Records), as well as a couple of second-hand stores. The city has a few more, such as 78 Records (shit) and a few new ones I'm unfamiliar with, but the best of the bunch is easily Dada Records, a nondescript store front with a huge collection of different types of stuff. As I've found out, the store is quite involved with many of the city's 'experimental' bands, and has released a tape of various live recordings from a collection of Perth bands.

The artists I'm familiar with on the compilation (Royal Vomit, Mental Powers, Gilbert Fawn etc.) all provide a really great song each, but there really isn't anything remotely bad here. The songs range from soft folk/ambient to more outlandish and noisy experimentation, as well as more rock-oriented ones (as well as a hip-hop track). The comp is entrancing from beginning to end, and highly recommended.

Your Skull My Closet - We Find One Another

It’s probably not the most appropriate name in regards to their music, but one can definitely agree that Your Skull My Closet is an attention grabbing name for a band that is, for all intents and purposes, a radio rock band. Forming in New York several years ago, YSMC take the generally inauthentic and distasteful 90s popular rock style and breathe life into it, through a combination of solid, hook-laden songwriting and a subtle awareness of the popular indie-rock styles of today.

We Find One Another is YSMC’s third EP, continuing on with what they brand as a ‘cantankerous, circuitous tour through anglo-rock’s recent history’. The EP’s seven tracks meld together remarkably, despite subtle differences in motivation – while a lot of the lyrical and thematic nature of the EP is tongue-in-cheek, YSMC is not afraid to show a softer side, one which throws out Brand New-esque sensitivity amongst the sexualised grit that cements the EP together.

One important factor which keeps drawing me back to this CD is a particular ‘thrust’ that it has – while the band excels in an otherwise standard formula of intricate guitar lines hovering over a driving rhythm section, this EP in particular manages to really initiate an interaction with the listener, so much so that one begins questioning why he can’t stop listening to what is supposed to be a highly shallow form of music. As much as the band tote the sexual elements of hair metal and glam rock to be a foundation for YSMC’s style, the resultant fusion of catchy songs and pop glaze bring this EP together in all the right ways.

Eschewing track specifics, this record is a neat and tidy piece of rock music – it caters for a specific audience, but its charms will undeniably create another. Check out their blog here for info on how to purchase the album. Alternatively, have a listen here.

(WOMB) - Witches

(WOMB) is a Reno, Nevada based duo who've come together to make some industrial-tinged shoegaze. When first reading about them after I received their EP I was a little apprehensive of the labels associated - a band that is described as noise, electronic, shoegaze and industrial all at once does sound like it could either be a total mess or something overly simplistic. I was proven wrong however, as (WOMB) have a very consistent and engaging style about them, one which actually does combine all the aforementioned labels. The electronic beats have a certain dark industrial aesthetic behind them, one which contrasts sharply with ethereal waves of synthy bliss and dual male/female vocals.

To put it bluntly, this is a very downtrodden shoegaze band playing over industrial beats, and it sounds pretty great. Some moments on it even recall more typical electronica styles, such as on 'Revenant', but for the most part this sounds like a shoegazier form of Menace Ruine (not a bad thing). Personally I would like to see this band go into a darker direction, perhaps incorporating more noise or power electronics elements into their music. Still, Witches is a solid debut. The band have asked to have it posted up on the blog, so please feel free to download it and listen.

I'm not going to go into overly descriptive yada yada, but this is small package of very tight and intricately composed powerviolence. The arrangements and motifs play out in very interesting ways, favouring a hint of complexity over mere tempo changes and the like. Just get it.

Celephaïs - Becoming the Deceased

Atmospheric black metal is all the craze right now - bands are popping up all over the place with their own version of the style, which is in most cases not very different from everyone else's. So with that in mind, there shouldn't be any misconception with how this solo project sounds. Coming out of Germany, Celephaïs has recently put out its debut demo, which is a collection of reasonably lengthy tracks traversing black metal planes already well trodden by bands like Weakling, WITTR, Ash Borer, Leech etc. Obviously this is an amalgamation of black metal and post-rock, but what I like most about Becoming the Deceased is that it's entirely instrumental - not only does this promote the 'atmospheric' elements of the demo, but it also doesn't end up grasping for attention. The vast majority of this recording is very attention grabbing and feels 'right' without the inclusion of vocals. Lastly a mention should be made of the production - it's very clear, but everything sounds organic and in place. What surprised me most was to find out that the drumming is in fact programmed, as it doesn't sound electronically produced whatsoever.

Akitsa - Auprès de la mort, triomphant!

Well it's finally beyond me - Akitsa keep on putting out shitty black metal and I keep on enjoying it. Au Crepuscule wasn't very good but I bought it anyway and now I play it pretty regularly. Regardless, the band has a new EP out, and of course when I first heard about it I didn't really know what to expect. Sure it's gonna be black metal, but that doesn't really get into any specifics.

Auprès de la mort, triomphant! keeps things as lo-fi as they have ever been, but also puts together quite contrasting expressions of black metal. The A-side is a 6 minute dirge, displaying the band's depressive bm tendencies but keeping its roots in pure 'Akitsa'. Flip it over and we have a short black punx track, playing on all of Akitsa's 'Oi' sensibilities.

Closing off the B-side is some synth-y track, reminiscent of Burzum's shitty ambient albums. Fortunately it's a lot better than Burzum's shitty ambient albums, so you aren't left with a bad taste in your mouth after the EP finishes. At first I was a bit dubious of the track; while appreciating the fact that three completely different styles have been put together onto a record, I didn't quite see the appeal of the synth. Nonetheless it has grown on me.

Column of Heaven - Ecstatically Embracing all that we Habitually Suppress

Noise is the bastard?

Canada's The Endless Blockade has given us a fair few years worth of material to ponder in our dingy record dens, but this doesn't necessarily mean the blockade has come to a close - as the name would have us believe, the noise is indeed endless. Column of Heaven is an offshoot of the Endless Blockade, or in the words of the band, 'the new post-Blockade group', and they have recently released their first demo tape, called Ecstatically Embracing all that we Habitually Suppress.

Andy from the band states on his blog that 'When we were talking about starting this band the original idea was a loose "Like Blockade but with more noise and less hardcore; more weird shit." This release definitely isn't "less hardcore; more weird shit", at least not to my ears. The future may be different, but we'll see what that looks like when we get there i guess.'

His expression of Column of Heaven's sound is pretty accurate - Ecstatically... sounds a lot like Endless Blockade, but the band have in some ways suffocated the hardcore/pv aesthetic with more noise and power electronics. Obviously this was an element in Endless Blockade's sound too, and so I don't really hear much of a notable difference. The intro song 'Altars' and several other tracks on the demo encapsulate the foray into noise remarkably well. Rather than listen to my shitty descriptions, you can listen to the intro track as well as see its accompanying video here.

In my opinion this demo is nothing but good news. It carefully fills in the void that EB has left, and from the looks of it Column of Heaven are going to be taking the project into a different direction, one which I anticipate thoroughly.

Morgue - Eroded Thoughts

From the seemingly endless pile of good death metal that was released during the late 80s/early 90s we find this vile and highly underrated piece of osdm excellence that is, Morgue's one and only full-length release, Eroded Thoughts. The album doesn't offer much in terms of innovation but it shows that the band takes a huge pile of what was already on the table; cutting, slicing and mixing it up reaally nicely.

Morgue stray into various areas of death metal and that's what makes this album such a fucking treat to listen to. Some tracks are standard affairs, while some feature Mental Funeral inspired doom sections and then there are those which flash you with a good dose of technicality and melody (cheese free). The album clocks in at just over half an hour making it short and delectably sweet with it's complex song structures, doom-y passages, barked out vocals, precise drumming and catchy riffs and solos.

Eroded Thoughts

Suffering Luna - S/T

Suffering Luna were a crust/hardcore band that existed in the early to mid-90s alongside bands such as Despise You, Gasp and Dystopia. I won’t go into detail, but the band struggled to keep it together and eventually disintegrated, leaving two splits behind them (a 7” with Dystopia and a 12” with Gasp). The band has more or less reformed now, rehearsing and touring over the last year or so in anticipation of their new record, an LP that contains new material and a lengthy live recording.

While the hardcore aesthetic is prominent in Suffering Luna’s style, there is an inarguable originality to the way they play. Combining the eccentricity of Man is the Bastard with the hallucinatory nature of Gasp, Suffering Luna can be and often are labeled as ‘psychedelic hardcore’, a term that is perhaps a little vague but makes sense once the music is heard. If anything can be said for sure, it's that they don't sound anything like their contemporaries.

This self-titled LP contains three new tracks featuring Suffering Luna’s signature sound, a combination of compositionally progressive crust and highly textured soundscapes a la Neurosis. ‘Sea of Drugs’ opens the record, and sets the mood with an almost tribal feel and dirge-like pace, creating a sense of dread with a weighty atmosphere. The pinnacle of the three songs is the middle one, ‘Paranoid Delusions’ – this ten minute epic showcases the band’s capabilities clearly, displaying their ‘psychedelic hardcore’ in full force.

The B side of the record is a 24 minute live set, recorded last year in a studio – the sound quality is high, allowing one to properly hear everything that is going on in Suffering Luna’s music. This includes spacey bleeps and bloops and disfigured samples played under the lumbering crust that defines the band. There is definitely a disparity between the live recording and the properly mastered songs, however the difference doesn’t lie in quality but in the nature of the recordings – the live set has a very full sound, with the vocals higher in the mix and the atmosphere a little more abrasive. Regardless, the two sides show two different ways of hearing Suffering Luna’s music, and both are highly invigorating.

Whether or not the reformed band will last is hard to say, but as it stands their new material is very solid. A lot of work has gone into making this record cohesive, and even the live set sits remarkably well along with the other songs. Cremation Lily

Cremation Lily is harsh noise, power electronics, with underlying dark melodies and atmospherics. the tracks typically start off abrasive, and end soft and fuzzy. these were both released by Strange Rules, and of course, are already long gone. if you like this, keep an eye on this label as the pressings are always very limited.

with the ability to rip cassette tapes becoming more common, a large number of old, out-of-print, death metal demos are springing up left and right, revealing just how underrated the death metal scene was back in the early 90's. with the internet in it's infantile stages, the underground was just that, the underground. when the tapes sold out, that was it. no one would ever hear these Danes, and their unbelievably heavy death/grind ever again, unless they knew one of the lucky fucks that happened to snag a copy of this back in the day. technology has successfully brought the dead back to life. hail technology!

Fallen Angel '92 & '93

Vattnet Viskar - Demo 2011

Vattnet Viskar's recently released demo did not really strike me at first - their brand of blackened doom seems to be aspiring towards something like Ghast, but doesn't quite capture the intensity and 'grit' of their sound. Repeated listens to these two tracks revealed something different however, and made me realise that VV were not really going for the Ghast sort of sound, but trying to merge the buoyant black/doom elements with something more melodic and harmonious.

The two tracks on the demo clock in at a total of about 14 minutes, and they both share one significant quality - whatever the first half of each song may incite in you, the second halves are intensely satisfying. While, for example, the beginning of 'Despair' sounds like some contrived black metal perhaps along the lines of Lake of Blood (though calling them contrived is a bit of an exaggeration on my behalf), the band carefully use these lacklustre passages to propel their songs into something much more reflective and enjoyable.

When having properly absorbed the two tracks, on relistening my original opinions on the first halves also changed - when the songs are taken as wholes, VV expand beyond a one-dimensional black/doom act. While this demo is not the best thing I've heard this year, it does well within its genre, and perks my interest enough to keep my eyes on the group.

Originally released on cassette (I think), the band now have both songs available to stream or download on their bandcamp.

Bone Dance / Divider / Plebeian Grandstand - Three-way Split 12"

This three-way split 12" is being released by France's Throatruiner Records sometime soon, and a track from each band can be heard on the Throatruiner Recs bandcamp page. The three bands, two from the USA and the third (Plebeian Grandstand) from France, all play varying forms of hardcore but complement each other remarkably well.

My favourite of the three bands is Bone Dance, from Idaho USA. Their song 'Conniver' is perhaps the most aggressive of the three, incorporating some grind into their hardcore aesthetic. Divider's track is the longest, coming in at almost 6 minutes, and unfortunately drags. The NY group put in a little 'post-' flair to their brand of dissonance, and though it's very listenable, it feels a little underwhelming coming after such a rager in 'Conniver'.

Finally we have Plebian Grandstand, who blend 'emoviolence' a la Orchid into a skramz-y template - it works pretty well. Their song 'Woe is Me' is dissonant and jarring, yet maintains a delicate cohesion - it feels like something's going to explode but never does, a result of the song displaying a tangible uneasiness throughout its 3 minute length. It's quite unsettling in all the right ways.

Evil Invaders III

Despite planning on making the trip across the wastelands of this country to attend Evil Invaders III, I didn't quite manage to work it out, with uni and work etc. Which is pretty shitty considering the line-up of (but not limited to) Ignivomous, Innsmouth, Portal, Grave Upheaval, Black Jesus, Impetuous Ritual and the legendary dISEMBOWELMENT ressurected under the name d.USK. The gig is essentially the culmination of Australian underground death metal.

While I didn't make the trip, fellow slayer Eddie went up to Sydney from Melbourne to catch the show, and was nice enough to write about his time there. Read it here.

Mefitic - Signing the Servants of God

Mefitic hail from Italy brining forth some bestial death/black somewhat similar to Archgoat’s insane methods, with an equally malevolent but slightly more suffocating atmosphere. Vocals can be compared to those of Necros Christos which definitely suits this form of bleak and chaotic music with its crushing riffs. The production is pretty raw and you even get a really ambient vibe from the entire demo but you still get to hear all the instruments clashing heads to concoct a whirlwind of pure evil that will surely please satan’s little helpers.

Bad Braids - Arrow and Orb

While you're all still delving into Wreck and Reference's EP, here's another Music Ruins Lives record that will undoubtedly interest you. Bad Braids' EP Arrow and Orb is a collection of six intimate and enticing folk songs, making up a captivating twenty minutes of introspection.

Arrow and Orb is a simple record, eschewing complexity in the wake of honest emotion and placid contemplation. Even through its simplicity, it still took me a while to properly digest Megan Biscieglia's music. While it's clearly charismatic, the mixture of pop sensibilities and somber folk on the record is almost hypnotic, leaving the critic in me somewhere far away from Biscieglia's voice.

Folk music is about personality, and it's about emotion. Arrow and Orb demonstrates both of these plainly, which ultimately becomes its affecting quality. It sounds just as much like everything else as it does nothing else, an unwavering sign that this project does not need to cater to unestablished and whimsicial folk tenets to write a good song - Bad Braids is simply heartfelt folk, meant to be felt from your heart.

Wreck and Reference - Black Cassette

And so here I was thinking that I wouldn't ever find any new takes on doom metal worth hearing, until Wreck and Reference sent me a copy of their EP, Black Cassette. From the outset, this band's music retains elements of traditional doom, but it warps and distorts them into something totally unique. Coming out of California, the band describes themselves as a 'lo-fi electronic doom band', one that plays doom with no guitars. While this could be off-putting for some, all it does is simply set Wreck and Reference apart, putting them in a category that is completely their own.

Other than the drums and vocals, all the music on Black Cassette is electronically created using synthesizers and various samples. The end result is a composition that is structurally a 'doom' record, but one which loosens the genre's boundaries and leads expeditions into experimental territory. The claustrophobic nature of doom is here, but it is further accentuated by a noise-esque fuzz over the composition. Moments where the music bursts to life are shadowed by a deep rumble that is unnerving in the best possible way. Do not be mistaken, however, in thinking that this is as ‘lo-fi’ as the band claim – while there is a DIY feel to this record, it is immaculately produced and simply sounds great.

The pace of the EP is pretty much perfect. There are no lengthy songs here, and though the whole thing goes for a little over 23 minutes, I don't even notice the time when I listen to it. Compositionally, Wreck and Reference have nailed it. Each song is as engaging as the last, and while they keep to a similar core approach in each one, there are differences that set them apart and keep them fresh. Strange melodies, such as the one at the end of 'Evening Redness' or on 'Surrendering' are captivating and emotionally charged, a current that runs throughout the entire EP.

If I had to pick one thing about Wreck and Reference which makes me refer it (loosely) to traditional doom, other than the lethargic tempos, it would be the vocal work. While it's not a reference due to similarity, I'll simply drop the name Warning to get people interested. The vocals on Black Cassette are very unique and ordinary at the same time, something that Pat Walker is arguably known for. On Black Cassette, one thing that characterises all the vocal work is the acerbic tone in which it’s delivered, one which ranges from almost Placebo-like emission to Walker inspired wails (the vocal performance on 'In Chains, Awakening' a perfect example). If anything, they make Black Cassette all the more inviting.

What I love most about this record is the fuzz. And sometimes the lack of. The 'riffs' are made of walls of distortion, which swell and dip frequently, and the occasional moment where the absence of the fuzz is emphasised juxtaposes wonderfully with the rest of the composition. The quiet first half of 'Surrendering' as opposed to its abrasive and almost despondent climax is one such example, a formula that the band repeats in a variety of ways throughout Black Cassette.

At first I put little effort into this EP, but all it took was one concentrated listen for me to realise how good it is. Wreck and Reference is a young band, forming only a couple of years ago, and I'm while I'm unsure of any earlier releases, Black Cassette is reason enough to become a fan. They're a mesh of Warning and The Die is Cast-era Menace Ruine, with a lot of unique twists and touches - something which, in my opinion, simply has to be heard. This comes with the highest recommendation I can possibly give.
